After 25 years of collecting a range of cuff links from the odd to the truly beautiful and costly, I was faced with a daily problem: how would I see the links I owned, and make an appropriate choice for the cuffed shirt and tie that day. My links had been stored in closed rare wood jewelry boxes, and most recently re-used Shaffen-Berger Chocolate boxes made of pine.
There Had to be a Better Way
How could I store a large number of links in a small area, be able to easily view them, make a choice and have a convenient spot to return them when the day was done? Further, I was concerned about further consumption of precious rare hardwoods used to make premium jewelry boxes and was proud of my collection. I wanted to treat my links like other objects of art in my home - something that could be enjoyed even when I wasn’t wearing them.
My solution was simple - start over with modern design and materials, and meet my own criteria.
We Found the Answer in Lucite
The use of lucite allowed me to see and display all the links in small circular ‘pockets’. The mirrored back enabled viewing of the entire the link without regard to how I put them back. Because the design allowed for hanging on the wall or placing on my dressing table, it was compact and efficient. And, while oil used to make lucite isn’t perfect environmentally, it’s certainly better than hardwood trees.
